Sustainable Water and Integrated Management of Fish Migration and their Habitats in the Danube River Basin and NW Black Sea - SWIM

About the project

The SWIM project is aligned with the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” and aims to restore, protect, and improve the habitats of migratory fish species in the Danube River Basin and the northwestern Black Sea. The project brings together a broad consortium of partners that, through 13 activities across 7 pilot locations, develop and apply innovative, sustainable, and scalable solutions to improve habitat connectivity, quality, and preservation, as well as to enhance the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. Building on the rich experience gained in previous projects — MEASURES, WE PASS 1 and 2, SIMONA, and Danube lighthouse projects DALIA, DaWetRest, and Restore4Life — the SWIM consortium goes a step further and applies complementary technologies such as ex-situ fish restocking actions, spawning ground recovery, fish passes, a digital platform in articulation with the MEASURES information system and DTO, as well as distributed information centers, across a wide range of freshwater courses of the Danube and its tributaries.

Objectives

The key objectives of the SWIM project are the restoration and protection of migratory fish species habitats, the improvement of ecological connectivity of watercourses, and the long-term preservation of biodiversity in the Danube basin and the northwestern Black Sea. The project strives to establish new standards in the field of habitat restoration and actively contributes to the implementation of EU environmental policies through a holistic and multidisciplinary approach. An important element of the strategy is strengthening transnational cooperation among various stakeholders — government authorities, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and local communities — through the SWIM Alliance, with the aim of jointly designing solutions and ensuring the long-term sustainability of conservation measures. In this way, the project promotes biodiversity preservation, strengthens ecological resilience and the provision of ecosystem services, and contributes to the socio-economic well-being of local communities. The comprehensive approach of the SWIM project to ecological restoration and water ecosystem management serves as a model that can be used as an example of good practice throughout Europe and beyond.
