Department of Fruit Science, Viticulture, Horticulture and Landscape Architecture

The Department of Fruit Science, Viticulture, Horticulture and Landscape Architecture actively develops and improves educational and scientific research activities, nurturing a strong connection with the economy and the application of modern knowledge in practice. Through its operations, it continues the tradition of the Provincial Institute for Viticulture, Winemaking and Fruit Growing, founded on April 1, 1947, in Sremski Karlovci. With a long tradition, the Department is focused on the development of knowledge and skills in the fields of agricultural production, environmental protection and spatial planning.

Through modern study programs, students are provided with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for work in modern conditions. An interdisciplinary approach and cooperation with leading domestic and international institutions enable the continuous improvement of fruit and wine production, as well as the development and application of modern solutions in horticulture and landscape architecture.

The Department is recognized in the scientific community through active participation in numerous domestic and international projects. This cooperation enables students and researchers to gain experience in top-tier laboratories and present their knowledge at significant scientific conferences. Scientific research work represents the basis of our activities, with the goal of applying research results in practice and contributing to the development of agriculture and spatial planning.

Department Activities

The Department of Fruit Science, Viticulture, Horticulture and Landscape Architecture is the holder of teaching at the undergraduate, master and doctoral academic studies. Within the undergraduate academic studies, there are two study programs with modules:
Landscape Architecture with classical and dual study models, and Fruit Science, Viticulture and Horticulture with three modules: Fruit Science and Viticulture, Ornamental Horticulture, and Planting Material Production. Within the master academic studies, these programs are Landscape Architecture, Ornamental Horticulture, and Fruit Science and Viticulture. The goal of these programs is to educate experts capable of responding to the challenges of modern fruit and grape production and spatial planning, with the application of the latest scientific and technological achievements.

Research work is carried out in several laboratories, among which the pomology laboratory, wine analysis laboratory, tissue culture laboratory, and molecular-genetic analysis laboratory stand out. These laboratories examine fruit characteristics, control wine quality, improve plant species, and conduct analyses of the health status of planting material using modern methods.

Of special importance are the experimental estates, where scientific research and practical training of students are conducted. The Rimski Šančevi experimental field and vineyards in Sremski Karlovci represent a space where science, production, and education merge. In addition, the Department is engaged in the production and sale of fruit and grapevine seedlings, as well as wine and brandy.
The Department is recognized for the development of varieties and clones that have found wide application in practice, as well as for its contribution to improving production in large-scale orchards and vineyards.

In the field of landscape architecture, special emphasis is placed on modern design and arrangement of open spaces. Students are trained in the application of advanced 2D and 3D tools, as well as in independent management and realization of projects, connecting the natural, aesthetic, and functional values of space.

The activities of the Department are also directed toward cooperation with the economy, through the application of scientific results, the development of new technologies, consulting services, and the improvement of production processes.
