DALIA

Bioeconomy Excellence Alliance for Stimulating Innovative and Inclusive Green Transition - DALIA

About the project

79 million inhabitants live in the Danube river basin. As the Danube River Basin Management Plan indicates, the majority (52%) of all watercourses do not meet the criteria of good chemical status, and all monitored indicators are recording deterioration. The Danube represents the artery of the ecosystem of the entire basin and the wider region with significant ecological impact, and at the same time plays an important economic role – supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, creating jobs for the local population and possessing exceptional cultural significance. In order to properly manage this complex and sensitive ecosystem, it is necessary to think at the level of the entire basin and coordinate action from the Black Forest to the Black Sea.

The DALIA (Danube Region Water Lighthouse Action) project brings together 22 expert organizations – including universities, competent authorities, small and medium-sized enterprises and non-governmental organizations – from 8 different EU member states and associated countries, which together possess an exceptional set of knowledge covering not only the entire geographical basin, but also all areas of expertise necessary to address multidisciplinary challenges from source to mouth.

Objectives

The DALIA project offers options for strategies and policies concerning the protection of freshwater ecosystems and ecosystem connectivity in the Danube basin, as well as improved protection of local communities and ecosystems from extreme events and pollution threats. The DALIA project directly contributes to the establishment of EU and UN initiatives related to the further implementation of the Water Framework Directive, through the implementation of innovative activities in different geographical contexts, their scaling and multiplication of results through a broader system of ecosystems and related EU missions and project activities.

The project is led by Orszagos Vizugyi Foigazgatosag (OVF) from Hungary, in cooperation with 22 institutions from 9 European countries: Serbia, Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.
