Department of Water Management

The Department of Water Management is responsible for the organization and delivery of teaching in undergraduate and master’s academic study programs in Water Management, Utilization, and Protection. In addition, faculty members from the Department of Water Management are actively involved in teaching two joint international master’s study programs: Sustainable Agriculture, Food Production, and Technology in the Danube Region, and Soil Erosion and Torrential Flood Prevention. The main goal of these study programs is to educate graduate and master agricultural engineers who are equipped to apply modern tools and technologies to meet the challenges of contemporary agricultural production and water resource management, especially in light of current climate change.

Shortly after the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad in 1954, the need arose to educate experts in the field of land reclamation. Thus, as early as 1956, the Department of Agricultural Engineering was established, headed by Prof. Milenko Marjanov, where various aspects of land reclamation were also actively studied. In the 1962/63 academic year, the Section for Agricultural Engineering was founded, which began operating as an organizational unit of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1966. In 1969, this section focused on land reclamation, and in the 1977/78 academic year, this major evolved into the independent Department of Water Management and Water Utilization in Agriculture.

Today, the Department of Water Management is a teaching and research collective comprising 10 members. Faculty members and associates of the Department actively participate in teaching a large number of study programs at the Faculty of Agriculture, across all three levels of study.

The primary mission of the Department of Water Management is reflected in the dissemination and advancement of knowledge through all levels of higher education. To date, more than 500 students have graduated from the Department, while a significant number of engineers have earned academic titles of master of science, master’s degree, and doctor of science. Scientific research represents the core activity of the Department, as reflected in its current participation in a large number of successfully implemented national and international projects.

Department Activities

In addition to teaching, all Department members are involved in scientific research carried out through the Water Laboratory, two research centers, and the implementation of scientific research projects in the fields of water management, utilization, and protection. The results of these activities are measurable through the publication of numerous professional papers in leading world journals, as well as presentations at national and international scientific conferences.

In addition to traditional engineering aspects of the land reclamation profession, such as drainage, irrigation, watercourse regulation, erosion protection, and water quality analysis, special attention has recently been paid in solving water-related issues to the application of information technologies, decision-support tools in water management, and the introduction of ecological principles that form the basis of sustainable development. Thus, the Department of Water Management is one of the pioneers in the study and application of geographic information systems in water management and agriculture, as well as the application of remote sensing technologies and unmanned aerial vehicles in these fields.

Department members play an extremely active role in organizing scientific conferences, professional lectures at various events, and workshops. Over the past ten years, among numerous lectures and workshops, particular attention and response from experts in the field were drawn by the conferences „The Profession of Water Management Engineer: Present and Future from an Economic Perspective“ and „Land Reclamation – Identification of Key Water Management Problems in AP Vojvodina“, held in 2020 and 2022. These conferences represent a continuation of the tradition of holding the scientific-professional conference „Land Reclamation“, which over past decades has gathered experts in the field of water management at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad.

Learn more about our team.

The Department of Water Management is one of the pillars of teaching, scientific, and professional work at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Novi Sad, with a tradition spanning more than half a century. Water is one of the most important natural resources today, but at the same time one of the greatest challenges facing modern society. Climate change, frequent droughts and floods, growing water demands, protection of surface and groundwater quality, and the preservation of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems require new knowledge, modern technologies, and an interdisciplinary approach. That is why at the Department of Water Management we continuously improve the teaching process, following the latest scientific achievements and the needs of the economy and society. Our goal is to educate engineers and researchers who will be ready to respond to future challenges and contribute through their knowledge to the sustainable management, utilization, and protection of water resources.
Dr. Boško Blagojević, Full Professor, Head of the Department of Water Management
