Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops

The Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops is in charge of teaching in the undergraduate academic study programs of Field and Vegetable Crops and the master’s academic study programs of Soil, Plant and Genetics. The main goal of both study programs is the education of graduate and master agricultural engineers who possess modern theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as the competencies necessary for direct work in production, cultivation of field, vegetable and fodder crops, increasing the level of yield and product quality while preserving the environment and resources used.

The Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops was first established back in 1956, under the name Chair of Field Crops, only two years after the founding of the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad. In the first years after the founding of the Faculty of Agriculture, it was the backbone of the work of the Department of Field Crops, which was later renamed to the field and vegetable crops study track. As part of the reorganization of work and transformation of the faculty in the late 1970s, the Chair received its current name “Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops”. A significant contribution to the work of the Chair, both in the field of teaching and the promotion of its activities, was made by eminent professors (Prof. Dr. Lazar Stojković, Prof. Dr. Novica Vučić, Prof. Dr. Petar Drezgić, Prof. Dr. Boriša Spasojević, Prof. Dr. Branka Lazić, etc.) for whom it is recognized today. The Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops also had broader scientific and professional recognition through cooperation with researchers from the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad.

Today, the Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops represents a strong teaching and scientific collective numbering 18 members. Teachers and associates of the Chair actively participate in teaching almost all study programs of the Faculty of Agriculture, at undergraduate, master and doctoral academic studies.

The primary mission of the Chair is reflected in the dissemination and improvement of knowledge through all levels of higher education, along with the education of experts trained to respond to the challenges of modern agriculture and the demands of agricultural producers. To date, more than 2,200 students have graduated from the Chair, while a significant number of agricultural engineers have acquired academic titles of master of science and doctor of science. Members of the Chair actively participate in scientific research projects, develop cooperation with other educational and research institutions, the economy and producers, which forms the basis of the educational and research work of the Chair and the Department, all with the aim of improving the curriculum of the study programs.

Activities of the Chair

All members of the Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops are actively involved in scientific research work which is realized through 4 laboratories, organized in accordance with the scientific disciplines studied at the Department of Field and Vegetable Crops. The results of these researches are reflected in numerous scientific and professional papers published in relevant domestic and international journals, as well as in papers presented at scientific conferences. Special emphasis is placed on the applicability of research results in practice, with the aim of their implementation through the system of developing new plant cultivation technologies or improving existing production systems by applying the most modern scientific achievements.

In addition to traditional agronomic disciplines, the Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops directs its strategic development towards the areas of climate-smart production, quality food production in agricultural systems, challenges of industrial agriculture, sustainable resource use, while simultaneously highlighting food safety in the foreground. The topics dealt with by the Chair also imply ways of transforming agri-food production systems by changing production methods and establishing a balance between the rural sector, processing capacities and market demands, promoting sustainable technologies in resource use, bio-exploitation and biodiversity conservation. In this context, teachers and associates continuously introduce modern teaching content at all levels of studies, among which subjects such as: Agronomic adaptations to climate change, Quality standards of field crop products, subjects related to digital tools in agriculture, etc. stand out. The Chair is focused on the expertise and competence of agricultural engineers educated through the proposed teaching content, acquiring advanced agronomic knowledge, which enables future agricultural engineers to successfully apply the most modern technical and technological achievements, thereby contributing to the improvement of the stability, efficiency and profitability of agricultural production. Within our Chair, in addition to publishing textbooks and monographs, we are proud that our members are editors of two journals published within the Faculty of Agriculture, namely “Annals of Scientific Papers” http://polj.uns.ac.rs/sr/node/469 and “Contemporary Agriculture” https://www.contagri.info/.

A special value and recognition of the Chair are its members who are highly appreciated and respected by producers and the economy and who laid the foundations of modern agricultural production in Vojvodina. Prof. Dr. Lazar Stojković is considered the founder of the Faculty of Agriculture, while Prof. Dr. Novica Vučić and Prof. Dr. Petar Drezgić received numerous awards for their work and became members of the academy of sciences. The Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops has also produced 5 Deans of the Faculty of Agriculture and a larger number of vice-deans.

The teaching process is carried out by a team of over 70 teachers and associates, including prominent experts and members of relevant scientific and professional institutions. Out of the total number of teachers and associates participating in the teaching and research process, 41 are employed at the Department of Veterinary Medicine. Teachers and researchers of the Department have published more than 3,000 scientific and professional papers, textbooks and publications, thus significantly contributing to the development of veterinary medicine.

Today, the Chair of Field and Vegetable Crops represents one of the pillars of the teaching, scientific and professional work of the Faculty of Agriculture, with a tradition spanning more than six decades. Throughout its development, the Chair has built a recognizable identity based on the combination of basic scientific and agronomic disciplines integrated into a modern, recognizable and practical concept of cultivating the most important crops, which is communicated with students and the public, following dynamic changes in the field of agricultural production. Today, in conditions of intensive climate change, falling productivity, changes in the sowing structure and digitization of agriculture, we place special emphasis on the development and application of the concept of conservation tillage, soil and biodiversity conservation, as well as climate-smart agriculture. Our goal is to educate highly competent engineers with modern theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of food production systems through the study of morphological and biological properties of major field, vegetable and fodder crops and the basic elements of their production and utilization technology. The Chair fosters a strong connection between teaching and scientific research work. Through work in modernly equipped laboratories and participation in domestic and international competitions and projects, our teachers and associates actively contribute to finding new measures or models of agriculture in order to increase the amount and quality of yields of the most important crops. We are particularly proud of the numerous generations of graduated engineers, masters of science and doctors of science who have successfully integrated their knowledge into practice, science and the economy and who are recognized as the most famous ambassadors of our work. We are open to cooperation with the economy, scientific institutions and international partners, because we believe that the most significant results can be achieved through joint work. In this spirit, the Chair will continue to improve the teaching process, develop research and contribute to the modernization of agriculture in the future.
