Department of Phytomedicine and Environmental Protection

The Department of Phytomedicine and Environmental Protection is responsible for teaching undergraduate and master’s study programs in Phytomedicine. The primary objective of the study program’s two modules, Plant Protection and Protection of Agricultural Products, Human and Animal Health, is to educate graduate and master agricultural engineers who possess modern theoretical and practical knowledge and competencies necessary for the application of integrated pest management, safe and sustainable use of plant protection products, environmental protection, and the production of safe food in accordance with the principles of sustainable agriculture.

University teaching and education in the field of phytomedicine, i.e., plant protection, at the Faculty of Agriculture began with the establishment of the Department of Plant Protection in 1960, establishing a tradition 66 years long. Since the establishment of the Faculty, undergraduate academic teaching has been implemented through several accredited curricula and programs, which have continuously developed and improved in accordance with the needs of the profession and modern agricultural practice. As a result of this development, the modern Phytomedicine study program was formed, designed to provide the competencies necessary for work in the field of plant protection.

Master’s academic studies in Phytomedicine represent a logical continuation of undergraduate four-year studies and enable further professional and scientific development of students. Teachers and research associates of the Department of Phytomedicine and Environmental Protection actively participate in the implementation of doctoral academic studies through elective courses within the Agronomy study program.

A large number of students have graduated from the Phytomedicine (Plant Protection) and Agroecology and Environmental Protection study programs to date, a significant number of whom have continued their education and earned master’s/magister degrees, as well as doctorates, thereby making a significant contribution to the development of scientific and professional staff in the field of plant protection and the environment. In addition to the 25 teachers and associates who make up the Department, young researchers also play an exceptionally important role in the implementation of teaching, contributing through their engagement, modern approach, and activity to the continuous development of the Department and the enhancement of its scientific and educational activities.

Department Activities

All members of the Department are actively involved in scientific-research and professional work carried out within multiple laboratories and research units, in accordance with the scientific fields studied at the Department of Phytomedicine and Environmental Protection. Research activities encompass various aspects of phytomedicine, from fundamental studies of the biology and ecology of pests, through the development and improvement of methods for integrated and biological plant protection, to the testing of the efficacy and safe application of plant protection products under various agroecological conditions. The results of these studies are confirmed by numerous scientific and professional papers published in relevant domestic and international journals, as well as in presentations at scientific conferences. Special emphasis is placed on the applicability of research results, with the aim of their implementation in practice through the improvement of existing and the development of new plant protection strategies based on the principles of sustainability and environmental protection.

The Department directs its strategic development toward modern approaches to phytomedicine and agroecosystem protection, with a special focus on integrated and biological plant protection, rational and safe use of plant protection products, and the preservation of human health and the environment. In this context, teachers and associates continuously improve teaching content at all levels of study, with the goal of acquiring advanced knowledge and competencies necessary for the application of modern scientific and technological achievements in practice and contributing to sustainable agricultural production.

Learn more about our team.

The Department of Phytomedicine and Environmental Protection is extremely proud of its long tradition in educating experts in the field of plant protection, as well as its significant role in the teaching, scientific-research, and professional work of the Faculty of Agriculture. Throughout its development, the Department has built a recognizable approach based on the integration of fundamental and applied knowledge, keeping pace with contemporary challenges in agricultural production, food safety, and sustainable natural resource management. Amid increasingly pronounced climate change, the emergence of new pests, and the need for sustainable agriculture, we pay special attention to the development and application of modern concepts of integrated and biological plant protection, the sustainable use of plant protection products, the preservation of agroecosystems, and environmental protection. Our goal is to educate highly competent engineers capable of applying acquired knowledge in practice, economy, and science, while respecting the principles of sustainable development and modern standards in agriculture. The Department fosters a strong connection between teaching, scientific research, and professional work. Through activities in laboratories, participation in national and international projects, and cooperation with scientific institutions and industry, the teachers and associates of the Department actively contribute to the development of new knowledge and innovative solutions in the field of phytomedicine and environmental protection. We are particularly proud of the numerous generations of graduate engineers, master's students, and doctors of science who have successfully built their professional development and careers in scientific institutions, education, public services, and industry. Guided by the idea of continuous progress, the Department will continue to improve the teaching process, develop scientific research, and contribute to the development of modern, safe, and sustainable agriculture in the future.
