Department of Animal Science

The Department of Animal Science encompasses education, scientific research, and cooperation with the economy in the field of animal husbandry. It monitors modern trends in livestock production, with a special emphasis on sustainable production, animal welfare, genetic improvement, animal nutrition, and the application of innovative technologies in production systems.

The Department has a long tradition in educating experts in the field of animal science, and also represents one of the main pillars for the development of scientific research in the region. Over decades of work, the Department has made a significant contribution to the development of livestock production, as well as to the improvement of selection and breeding of various species of domestic animals.

The primary mission of the Department is the dissemination of knowledge and the education of personnel through undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral academic studies. Upon graduation, animal science engineers are equipped to respond to the challenges of modern agricultural production. Students acquire knowledge in the fields of animal nutrition, genetics and breeding, production technology, health care, and farm management.

Scientific research work is one of the important activities of the Department, enabling active participation in domestic and international projects. The focus of project activities is on issues of production efficiency, product quality, system sustainability, and the environmental impact of animal husbandry, alternative protein sources, genetic development and preservation, while special emphasis is placed on the practical application of research results.

In addition to education and research, the activities of the Department are directed towards cooperation with the economy – from the improvement of production processes, through consulting services, to the transfer of knowledge and technologies into real production systems.

Within the Department of Animal Science, there are several specialized laboratories:

  • Laboratory for Milk Quality Testing (analysis and control of milk yield (accredited according to ISO 17025 standard)
  • Laboratory for Animal Feed and Animal Product Quality Control (accredited according to ISO 17025 standard)
  • Laboratory for Animal Breeding, Reproduction, and Physiology (genomic selection and biotechnologies)

Research results are published in leading scientific journals and presented at domestic and international scientific conferences, while there is a constant endeavor to directly apply scientific knowledge in practice.

A particularly significant segment of activities is the Agro Campus – research and educational center, which enables the realization of experiments, the development of innovations, and cooperation with the economy. Within it operate:

  • research center for poultry production
  • pilot farm for edible insect farming
  • experimental platforms for commercial and scientific research

The Department actively participates in domestic and international projects, such as:

  • PRO-SUSTAIN (alternative protein sources)
  • ClimaPannonia (climate-resilient animal husbandry)
  • DALIA (environmental monitoring)

Cooperation with the economy is one of the key pillars of activity. Through consulting, commercial experiments, and technology transfer, the Department directly contributes to the improvement of production. Particularly prominent is cooperation with international companies, such as Aviagen, where Agro Campus is recognized as one of the reference experimental stations at the global level.

As the Director of the Department of Animal Science, I proudly point out that our organizational unit represents a place where education, science, and practice merge in the function of preserving and improving livestock production. As the main breeding organization for AP Vojvodina, with the support of two accredited laboratories, we have a special responsibility in the conditions of challenges that animal husbandry faces today. Through undergraduate, master's, and doctoral studies, as well as through cooperation with scientific institutions and the economy, we enable our students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for responsible and sustainable engagement in animal husbandry under real production conditions.
