DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS AND RURAL SOCIOLOGY

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology is a developed and highly recognizable department of the Faculty of Agriculture, and throughout its existence, one of the most significant resources of this department has been its human resources structure for teaching and scientific research work. Teachers and associates from the Department actively participate in the teaching process across all study programs of the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad, as well as in scientific research work.

The Chair of Agricultural Economics at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad was founded in 1957, since which time it operated within the Institute of Agricultural Economics, until 2004 when the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology was formed as one of the eight departments of the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad.

The Institute of Agricultural Economics was founded in 1971 at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad, and in 1977 the independent scientific Institute for Rural Sociological Research was also established. The current Department (until 2004 named the Institute) was created in 1983 by the integration of the two aforementioned institutes: the Institute of Agricultural Economics and the Institute for Rural Sociological Research.

Through the successful work of the Chair and the Institute, as well as recognizing the needs of agriculture as an economic sector, the opinion on the agricultural economics profession matured in the form of a special educational profile at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad. Thus, in 1977, the Agricultural Economics major was founded, which today represents one of the pillars of education in the social field (economic sciences) at the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad.

There are many reasons that support your decision to invest in your education in Agricultural Economics. The educational profile of an agricultural economist is irreplaceable and has a great perspective in the Republic of Serbia, where agriculture constitutes a very important sector in overall economic activity, especially in AP Vojvodina, which represents a region with highly productive agriculture and an integrated processing industry. The AE Department educates experts who understand modern processes in agriculture and agrarian economics in the dynamic conditions of global markets, the increasingly present challenges of climate change, and the digitalization of agriculture. Through a blend of modern scientific knowledge, an interdisciplinary approach, and significant cooperation with the agribusiness sector, we educate students for analytical and critical thinking in various spheres of agribusiness and qualify them for making optimal decisions and sustainable solutions in practice. Great support to our students is also provided by the already traditional ALUMNI AE organization, which actively participates in the training and employment of our graduates. Our strength lies in the expertise of the teaching staff, as well as well-founded research work and active monitoring of global trends, with a clear mission – the development of competent agricultural economists who drive innovation and contribute to sustainable and competitive agriculture. The interdisciplinarity of research teams from the AE Department provides the best response to every research challenge in the agrarian sector that has its focal point in agricultural economic science and profession.
