LABORATORY FOR SOIL, FERTILIZER AND PLANT MATERIAL TESTING
Department for Genetic Testing and Seed Science in Agriculture
Department Activities
The department performs analyses of field and vegetable crop seeds. Regarding service activities, the department provides opportunities for testing various seed quality parameters using modern equipment and methods. The Department for Genetic Testing and Seed Science in Agriculture belongs to the Department of Field and Vegetable Crops. In addition to providing services, the laboratory facilities are used for practical classes for students of the Field and Vegetable Crops and Organic Agriculture study programs, as well as for conducting experiments required for thesis and dissertation work at all levels of study. The laboratory will be of great importance for the development of the new Agrobiotechnology study program. A large share of the department’s work is focused on scientific research, which includes various molecular analyses and techniques such as marker-assisted selection. The laboratories are fully equipped for the preparation and packaging of seeds for field trial sowing, and the most modern and highest quality machinery for sowing and variable crop fertilization is located at the faculty’s experimental fields.
Scope of Testing
The equipment of the department enables the following services:
- Testing of germination energy and germination capacity for plant species: maize, soybean, sunflower, wheat, barley, rapeseed, vetch, alfalfa, clover, safflower and camelina
- Determination of seed moisture and thousand-seed weight of field and vegetable species
- Testing for GMO traces (strips) in maize and soybean
- Seed vigor test for field and vegetable crops
- Seed aggregation test for field and vegetable crops
